President Barack Obama got candid about body image when he and Misty Copeland sat down for a conversation with Time’s Maya Rhodan. At one point, President Obama turned to Misty and said, “I have to say, as an outsider, when I hear your body type is considered more athletic or large, you’re tiny! For those of you who are watching, you may not be able to see. You’re petite!” He acknowledged that body image continues to be a challenge for young women who are pressured to look a particular way. “When you’re a dad of two daughters, you notice more,” he said. “And that pressure I think has historically always been harder on African American women than just about any other women.”
Mentioning his daughters, Malia and Sasha, President Obama added, “The fact that they’ve got a tall, gorgeous mom who has some curves — and that their father appreciates — I think is helpful.” Watch the video above to see President Obama and Misty Copeland touch on body image, race, and culture, and then check out Misty’s stunning spread in Harper’s Bazaar.
